Who Should Attend

Engineers, Geologist, Operations, and Finance team members. Any team member that needs an introductory level of understanding of emissions and carbon markets

Description

This course offers a foundational understanding of carbon management, a critical component in today’s global drive toward sustainability and emissions reduction. Students will explore core principles, from emissions accounting to the nuances of corporate and national emissions targets, gaining insight into how emissions metrics—like absolute versus intensity measures—help shape effective carbon strategies. By defining Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions, students will also gain the skills to measure, calculate, and ensure data quality in emissions reporting.

Regulatory frameworks are essential to navigating carbon management, and this course provides an overview of the major regulatory systems, from corporate disclosure requirements to emissions trading schemes and cross-border regulations. Special emphasis is placed on how these regulations impact companies, particularly in carbon-intensive industries like oil and gas, fostering an understanding of compliance obligations and market impacts.

The course delves into the mechanics of carbon markets, covering compliance mechanisms, carbon credits, taxes, and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Students will explore carbon pricing and registries, which are central to both compliance and voluntary carbon markets. By understanding these market tools, students will learn how carbon markets incentivize emissions reductions and support sustainable investment.

Finally, students will engage with carbon management strategies, examining the role of stakeholders, decarbonization technologies, and emissions measurement tools. Through topics like Measurement, Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MMRV) and offset versus inset solutions, the course will equip students with practical skills to develop and implement decarbonization strategies tailored to diverse organizational needs.

Learning Outcomes

1.    Develop fluency in the terminology and concepts related to emissions and carbon markets, enabling clear communication and understanding of key terms and frameworks used across industries.

2.    Recognize and articulate the complexities and challenges inherent in emissions accounting, including issues of measurement, calculation, and data quality, as well as the implications of absolute versus intensity metrics.

3.    Attain a broad understanding of the various regulatory mechanisms that impact companies, including corporate disclosure requirements, emissions trading systems, and cross-border regulations, with a focus on their relevance to carbon-intensive sectors.

4.    Distinguish between carbon allowances and carbon credits, understanding their roles in compliance and voluntary markets and how they support different pathways to emissions reduction.

5.    Explain the factors behind the diverse carbon prices found across markets, including regulatory frameworks, market design, and economic considerations, and assess what these price variations mean for companies and stakeholders.

6.    Identify the core components necessary for creating an effective carbon management plan, including stakeholder engagement, measurement tools, MMRV processes, and decarbonization strategies that align with both regulatory requirements and company objectives.
