James (Jim) Brenneke holds a B.A. in Geology from Augustana College and an M.S. in Geology from the University of Illinois. He began his career with Shell Oil Company, working across research, international exploration, and domestic exploration and production for various Shell subsidiaries. Jim later joined Subsurface Consultants & Associates (SCA) as a consulting geoscientist, where he also served in leadership roles including Technical Manager, Vice President of Geology & Engineering, and Treasurer. He subsequently moved to BP’s Deepwater Gulf of Mexico Production organization before returning to SCA.

Jim brings over 40 years of experience in onshore and offshore U.S. operations and numerous international projects. He has contributed to exploration discoveries, field extensions, and development wells, and has published on deep-sea carbonates and fault trap assessment. 

Currently, Jim teaches SCA’s flagship Applied Subsurface Geological Mapping, Quality Assurance/Quality Control Skills in Subsurface Mapping (QAQC) courses along with being a mentor for the project phase of the Daniel J Tearpock Geoscience Certification Program . He is also co-author of the textbook Applied Three-Dimensional Subsurface Geological Mapping with Structural Methods, 3rd Edition.
