Course Description
As the search for oil and gas becomes more difficult, a source of data often overlooked are the cuttings and cores of existing wells. This course teaches participants a comprehensive and consistent method to describe lithology of cuttings and cores using a binocular microscope and a few simple tools. Topics include lithology, accessory minerals, porosity and permeability, color, diagenesis and metasomatism, texture, grain size, framework, etc. Using these techniques these data can then be used for reservoir description, facies mapping, etc. in the search for new oil and gas resources and efficient exploitation of known resources.
Practical applications of concepts and methods for describing rocks is demonstrated through exercises to reinforce key concepts. Participants are expected to independently view and describe a sequence of samples for the final exercise.
Completion of the course should prepare participants for immediate application and utilization of all concepts and techniques for describing cuttings and cores.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the principals of cuttings and core description with the binocular microscope including important rock properties
- Understand the criteria to differentiate cavings in a cuttings sample
- Ability to describe clastic rocks including shale, siltstone and sandstone, heircomponents, porosity and other physical characteristics
- Ability to describe and differentiate limestone, dolomite and evaporites, their physical characteristics and diagenesis
- Independently describe a sequence of samples and generate a log from cuttings
Who should attend
Geologists in both exploration and production who desire to enhance their ability to get more information from existing sample datasets and describe lithology from cuttings and cores for stratigraphic interpretation, fancies mapping and reservoir characterization.
Course Content
- Principals of cuttings and core examination with the binocular microscope, including sample properties and wireline log response
- Sandstone, sandstone components, porosity and other physical characteristics
- Siltstone and Shale
- Carbonate classification, limestone and dolomite characteristics and diagenesis
- Fossils
- Evaporates and other miscellaneous rock type’s
- Logging exercises
Tuition for this course includes:

- Manual and CD-Rom with examples
- Basic Tool Kit includes tweezers, a metal probe, glass rod, polypropylene beaker, acid bottle, watch glasses, sample trays, water bottle, artists brush and grain-size scale in a storage box.
