Course Description
This school gives a practical understanding of how to interpret production logs. This is an introductory level course and requires no prior knowledge of logs or log interpretation. The course provides the interpretation techniques needed to diagnose the actual flow in a well. With proper interpretation, production logs can give the location of water entries, provide the locations, rates and fluid types of producing zones or injecting zones, identify non-performing perforations, detect and locate channels, and identify many other flow conditions. Vertical, deviated, and horizontal wells (both producers and injectors) are addressed. An entire section is devoted to production logs in horizontal wells. The course is generic, no specific software is used. Equations are solved by hand with a calculator. The main emphasis is on today's common production log measurements (spinner, temperature, capacitance, fluid density, pressure, gamma ray, casing collar locator). The newer sensors and tools are also addressed. Both the theory and practice of applied interpretation are covered as well as practical advice, exercises throughout, limitations of production logging, numerous comments and study of actual logs. The accompanying manual provides a useful reference for attendees to use after the course. The emphasis of the course is to provide a well-rounded understanding of practical interpretation of production logs and all associated aspects.
