Basics of the Petroleum Industry

Instructors: Hal F. Miller, Joe Brewton, Dan Tearpock, Sia Agah
Course Length:  3 days
Course CEUs:  2.4

Course Description
The Basics of the Petroleum Industry course provides a "Prospect-to-Market" perspective on the oil and gas industry, covering topics from the generation and migration of oil and gas to the refining and marketing of petroleum products.  Emphasis is placed on the upstream segment of the industry, with participants gaining a fundamental understanding of exploration technology, geology and geophysical skills, and the drilling, reservoir and production engineering disciplines.  The course includes an introduction to basic risking concepts, oil and gas economic evaluation, and reserve/resource classification. The course is designed for both the entry level technical person, and the non-technical person who needs a practical understanding of the petroleum industry.  Past attendees have included new hire geologists, geophysicists, and engineers, technical support staff, lawyers, accountants, administrative assistants and managers.  The diversity of participants adds greatly to the classroom interaction.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand how oil and gas are formed, trapped, discovered and developed.
  2. Become familiar with the disciplines and skills involved in finding and producing oil and gas.
  3. Recognize the basic tools, equipment and processes used in finding, developing, producing and refining hydrocarbons.
  4. Understand the industry language and terminology that you are likely to encounter in your job.
  5. Understand the overall industry workflow from the prospect to the gas pump, and how your work fits into the big picture.

Who should attend
Entry level geoscientists and engineers, as well as technical support staff, administrative assistants, clerks, lawyers, landmen, accountants, managers and anyone else who will benefit from a broad understanding of how oil and gas are discovered, developed and delivered. Also for participants coming to the oil industry from other backgrounds or industries and for non-oil industry people who simply want to learn more about this fascinating business.
